These days most dim sum restaurants just lets you order off the menu, and not like in the old days, when you can wait for the pushcarts to come by and choose what you like off those carts. It’s not the same. Actually it sort of takes the fun out of Yum Cha (Drinking Tea), which is the original purpose of these types of restaurants, eating dim sum is secondary. It’s fun to be able to open the lid of each item and see what it is before you pick it up, of course sometimes you end up waiting a long time for what you want, but that’s the way it’s supposed to be, it lets you take a break from eating.
I remember back in Hong Kong, every Sunday, the Yum Cha places would be packed, and families would go there together, as it’s probably the only day of the week everyone can get together to have a meal. Each family member would be sitting at the table reading a section of the newspaper, probably the only time they can do that during the week as well. Then once a cart comes by, each person can grab whatever he/she likes, and eat at their own pace. Nowadays you completely can not control how fast each item comes to the table, sometimes too fast, all at once, and you end up eating too fast, cuz the table isn’t big enough for everything, so you have to finish one before you can fit another, and before you know it, you are finished within half and hour, and you are stuffed as hell.
It started to rain again after lunch. Feels like monsoon season is here again. I decided the best thing to do on a day like this is to read a book. Obama’s “Dreams from My Father”has been my bathroom reading for the past month, and I’m only half way through, not in a great rush to finish it. Today, I decided to start a new book, a more fun book- “Brida”by Paulo Coelho. I loved his “Alchemist”. I finished it in 2 days, and read it a 2nd time in the same week. I’m not very good at writing book reviews, all I can say is it came to me at a time when I needed it most, like a sign from God. That’s what it felt like.

But unfortunately it was very cloudy and rainy that we couldn’t see a thing. The day before I was reading online about all the different ways to watch the Eclipse, besides using the special glasses, like you can also poke holes in a piece of white paper and see the light reflected on the ground, or some people get a bucket of water and drop black ink in it… but end up I didn’t need anything at all.
Well, it was nice to see footage from other cities. It is quite a phenomenon, just seeing the sky go from light to dark and then back to light again in just a few minutes was pretty cool.
Actually I think the old Me would’ve planned to go somewhere like Yang Shan to see it, or try to make an event or party out of it. But the new Me is getting lazy and is willing to settle for watching it on TV. I kinda miss the old Me when I think about it, the Me that didn't miss anything.
